Cycle to Work schemes

How does it work?

The Cycle to Work scheme is a way to access an amazing discount on a bike, and spread repayments over a long period.

There are a few different scheme providers, but the general process is as follows:

  • You choose the bike you want – this can be a new production bike, a handmade custom bike, or even a refurbished bike over a certain price threshold (not available on all CTW schemes)
  • We provide you with a quote to apply for a CTW voucher
  • Your employer pays the scheme provider for the bike
  • The scheme provider pays us for the bike and agrees to hire it to you
  • You repay the price of the bike over 3-60 months as a salary sacrifice, and at the end the ownership of the bike is transferred to you

We don’t offer it on bikes that are already very cheap or reduced in price, but unlike many other shops we don’t charge any fees for using CTW as a payment method.

What are the savings?

Because the repayments come out of your gross pay (before income tax and National Insurance are deducted), you effectively make a saving of 28-47% on the list price of the bike.

For example, if the price of the bike is £2,400 and you take out a 12 month agreement, £200 has to be repaid each month. But this £200 is taken out of gross pay before tax and NI, so your take-home pay is only actually reduced by £144. Over the course of the scheme, you will have bought a £2,400 bike for only £1,728 (plus a small fee charged by some schemes at the end). This is the minimum amount saved by someone in the basic 20% tax band – if you pay tax at a higher rate the savings will be substantially more.

What schemes are available?

Our preferred scheme is Green Commute Initiative. They are a social enterprise, regulated by the FCA. There is no limit on the value of the bike, only a £1 fee at the end of the hire period, and they are very easy for employers to work with for a one-off voucher. They are better than some of the other schemes at supporting independent bike businesses like ourselves.

We also accept vouchers from Vivup (popular with NHS employees) and Cyclescheme
